A FEW WORDS ABOUT Alexander Mertens:

I was born and grew up in Berlin, and studied architecture at the University of Arts Berlin (UdK). In 2002 I studied as an exchange student at Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO).

Back in Berlin I was starting working for Sauerbruch Hutton Architects before I graduated at the UdK in 2005. Since that period I became more and more interested in individual and sustainable solutions in combination with good and innovative architectural design.

In my diploma thesis I investigated the impact of increased tourism to the arctic environment on Svalbard, Norway. As an extension to the University of Svalbard my project mediates between tourism, academic research and nature in a sustainable way.

For my thesis I gained a commendation at the RIBA Undergraduate Architect Awards in London.

After my studies I came back to Oslo and started working for Div.A Architects, where I was involved in the design of the Hundsund secondary school and kindergarten.

At NSW Architects I worked with several small and big scale projects like the extension of the Archaeological Museum Stavanger or the new office building “Abels Hus” in Trondheim. At Nordic – Office of Architecture I was involved in designing façades and roof structures for the new Oslo Airport extension T2. Since September 2017 I am excited to join the team at Helen & Hard with its interdisciplinary and sustainable approach.

In my free time I love to spend time with my two sons, playing Squash and attending sail races.
