Quartier Rauchmühle
Winning competition entry
Location
Salzburg, Austria
Client
An Der Glan Investment, Salzburger Siedlungswerk, ÖSW

Scheduled completion 2019

The Project ”Quartier Rauchmühle” is located on the site of the former Rauch - milling complex in Salzburg, Austria. It will be framed by the newly re-naturalized Glan river in the west and the yet to be restored former millstream on the east.

Four buildings of the old complex will be kept and restored to house appartments, work spaces and an open center for workshops, theater and dance-rooms.
Those historical structures will be extended and surrounded by eight new residential buildings. Four for the private market, the other four as subsidized housing with rental apartments.

For the placement of the buildings, two strategies were combined: the extension of the existing buildings towards the north and west, and free standing houses with maximized sun exposure and views toward both the adjacent green areas as well as to the mountains on the horizon.

The buildings themselves are designed to accentuate the verticality – referencing the old, vertical silos and the vertical production process - and appear to exist of different volumes with different heights. The balconies are carved out of those rather solitaire blocks, contrasting the hard, white plaster façades with warm surfaces in wood. Those balconies are fanning out towards the sun and view, while at the same time protecting the users from insight from their neighbours.

The staircases with their large glazed façades open up towards the interior of the site. They end up in big terraces directly linked to the entrance area, that can be used as play areas, meeting places and other community activities. The landscape plan with its concept of soft transitions from hard to green surfaces is planned in close relation to the directions introduced by the buidlings’ geometry.
